For practicable purposes, Charles' Law states that the volume of a given mass of gas, held at constant pressure, is directly proportional to its absolute temperature. This may be stated mathematically as:

i = initial state of process
f = final state of process

The simple experiment below will demonstrate Charles' Law by allowing you to vary the temperature of a gas and observe the effect on the volume.

We have stated that Charles' Law remains true only as long as the pressure remains constant. For example in the experiment above, to ensure that the final pressure was the same as the initial pressure we allowed the gas to expand. This is because when a gas is heated its pressure will rise.
